MAROTTE
.......a stick puppet, a fool or jester's bauble,
a sceptre with a carved head a fad, a craze,
In the 19th century it was a child's
toy of a small doll figure, often wearing a tasseled tabard, all mounted
on a turned handle. When twirled round it might play a tune, if a musical
movement was cunningly housed in the doll's body.
The idea seemed worth trying,
and so here they are.
The figures are about 8" (200mm) high and with the handle and stand
are just under 15" (380mm)
They are made from papier mâché
and carved wood and decorated with various papers and metal foils. And
painted, of course. Although they are varnished, they are not indestructible.
They are definitely NOT for children
(or the dog) to play with as they could easily be reduced to a harmful
and indigestible snack
I don't do repairs. Never ever.
Eventually there will be a little
video clip of the marottes being twirled, but until I've worked out how
to do it, you'll just have use your imagination, or come and visit me
and get a demo and a coffee.
